Jintao kiwifruit
The golden fruit
The Jintao variety, or Actinidia Chinensis, is a special is GMO-free variety of kiwifruit selected by the University of Udine. The commercial name of the variety is Jintao, that means “the golden fruit”.
Characteristics of the plant:
- Vigour: Lower than Hayward, with close internodes
- Budding: It occurs a few days earlier than Hayward
- Bud opening: 80-90%
- Flowering: One week earlier than Hayward
- Harvest time: Medium-early (10th -20th October in Emilia-Romagna)
- Cooling demand: low (350-450 hours approx.), that is why it can be easily grown in the South
Characteristics of the fruit:
- Colour of the flesh: yellow
- Outer look: Regular cylindrical shape, hazelnut-coloured skin, hairless. It does not yield twin or flattened fruit
- Medium size: 90 g (size ranges from 70 to 130 g approx.)
- Sensorial characteristics: The high sugar content and balanced acidity (-25% compared to the green one) give it a sweet and aromatic taste
- Nutraceutical properties: High content of Vitamin C (+145% compared to the green kiwifruit), polyphenols (+80%) and potassium
- Shelf life: Thanks to its remarkably thick skin, it keeps more than 6 months in the fridge
